How can a star be so bright yet have such a low surface temperature?

The star is bright, cool, and red.How can a star be so bright yet have such a low surface temperature?Stars termed giants and supergiants are low temperature and high luminosity. The reason they are so bright is because they are so big, and thus the terms given to them. Imagine stars many times more massive than our sun. A red giant will have a very high luminosity.

Also, there is the matter of apparent brightness, as stars that are much farther away may appear to be dimmer than closer stars.
