What are the chances of seeing a shooting star?

I saw a shooting star last night, the boldest, clearest one I have ever seen. I live in Scotland, there's a lot of light pollution because it's a big town but last night it was okay. There wasn't any moon in sight, and it wasn't heavily cloudy, just a little bit.

Is it unusual to see a shooting star? And what are the odds of seeing one?
