How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?

And hey, for extra credit, how about getting them back to Earth too? And for that matter, being able to land on another moon or planet at the new star system. How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?there is a design for a "starship" that IS theoretically feasible.

it is known as the "Bussard RamJet" and you might look it up in the wikipedia.com ( it is also mentioned in Carl Sagan's "Cosmos".)

this ship can theoretically travel at 10 % the speed of light ( i.e 18,600 mi/sec .) it is technically possible to build it NOW if the motivation ( and funds) existed.

if you traveled on this ship, "relativistic effects" would slow your aging in comparison with the earth. In other words, when you return, hundreds of years may have elapsed in relation to only a few of your own. because of this, any trip must be considered "one way" in the social sense.

to answer your question, the technology is here but no one is trying becuase the time paradox is too real. besides, we wouldnt know where to go anyway. ( it would be hit or miss ). the landing part is quite simple.... the hard part is getting there !How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?
Light years away... ha ha!

(Damn, I just used a measure of distance to describe time!)

Anyway, there are so many advances that will need to be made first that the liklihood that this will take place in your lifetime is... pretty slim.

We can't travel fast enough for a crew to make it before they're dead several hundred times over. The other issues of replenishing food supplies and breathable atmosphere are doable bit not yet practical.

We'll have to wait and see if the promise of ion engines bears out. Then we'll have the Starship Enterprise on it's way by, maybe, the 23rd century. How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems? Not even. We haven't even sent people to Mars yet, so forget about sending people to Proxima Centauri's system for at least 300 years. Besides, with the suspended animation technology that's going on, who knows? Maybe we'll be able to freeze humans and send those cryo-humans to Proxima Centauri. How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?
We are about as close to being able to send people to other stars as Columbus was to being able to go to the Moon. In other words, not very close. How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?A long way off. Other star systems are more lightyears away than life expectancy currently. We would have build a ship and place people on it that would create new generations and educate them as to what to do next.

So unless you know of someone with a time machine, don't lose any sleep over it.
the ability exists .. however the risks are too high and the benefits too low.

Landing on another planet serves no economic benefit.. and any scientific benefit can be achieved by sending probes or rovers. Unless they can bring costs down, there wont be maned missions to far away places any time soonHow close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?
It will never happen.
not very close

there are many things that have to be taken into consideration before we can conclude as to how close we are to getting it done successfully.

first with today's chemical rockets, it is simply impractical to do, the reason is that to get to say Proxima Centauri which is approx. 4.3 light years away, traveling at the speed of todays chemical rockets the astronauts would die many time over, they are just too slow for that job.

the only fuel that we can produce to get better efficiency and more speed would be "antimatter" and we would need a couple of tons of it, the only problem is that we can only produce antimatter one atom at a time, unless we build a subatomic particle accelerator as big as the milky way galaxy, will we be able to produce enough antimatter to propel us to the nearest star, but since we cant build something that big, then we are just going to have to wait until we can maybe come up with some better technology for propelling our space ships.

you see landing on another moon or planet is now the least of our worries, the problem is getting there in reasonable time, ans with reasonable efficiency.

so how close are we? time will tell. How close is mankind to being able to send people to other star systems?
Days if their is new spaceship tha can travel as speed of light. and light years or even non if we have new tech.
