For my big semester project, I intend to direct and star in a play I've written. Anyone have any pointers on how best to achieve this? I can't feasibly keep running on and off stage when I'm in the middle of everything, can I?How do you direct and star in a play you've written? It would be tough... if i were you, I'd just drop the acting part. being the director AND writing the play is already tiring and great enough.
great job and good luck~How do you direct and star in a play you've written? That's exactly how you do it ... by being in the middle of everything. A good director doesn't sit in the auditorium ... he or she needs to be on stage as part of the action ... communicating with the other actors. The solution is to appoint an assistant director who can watch for problems with blocking ... but, believe me, this assistant director won't have much to contribute if you as actor/director have a 'concept'. Guard against making the action revolve around you to the detriment of the other characters. In other words don't direct in a 'look at me; I'm in charge' sort of way.
